"Hunger Games" rings up 4th box office win

ReutersBy Lisa Richwine and Ronald Grover | Reuters – 19 mins ago

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The blockbuster movie "The Hunger Games" dominated box office charts for the fourth weekend in a row, outselling three new releases at U.S. and Canadian theaters.

The Lions Gate Entertainment Corp drama about a televised teen death match brought in $ 21.5 million at domestic theaters from Friday through Sunday, according to studio estimates compiled by Reuters.

The ongoing appetite for "Hunger Games" left three newcomers trailing. "The Three Stooges," featuring an updated cast of finger-poking stars, beat industry expectations to land in second place. The horror film "The Cabin in the Woods" finished third.

The last movie to win four straight weekends was "Avatar," the highest-grossing film of all time, according to Hollywood.com. That film, released by Fox, went on to generate $ 760 million in domestic sales.

Since "Hunger Games" hit theaters March 23, the movie has racked up $ 337 million in North American (U.S. and Canadian) ticket sales. That places it 22nd all-time in ticket sales, just behind Walt Disney Co.'s "Finding Nemo," according to the site Box Office Mojo.

The film has also added $ 194 million from international markets, according to Lions Gate, for a global total of $ 531 million.

"There's nothing old about finishing No. 1," said Richie Fay, Lions Gate president of distribution. "We're just happy to be able to look over our shoulders and see how well we've done."

Horror movie "The Cabin in the Woods," also from Lions Gate, rung up $ 14.8 million in domestic theaters. Industry forecasters had projected "Cabin" would debut with at least $ 13 million domestically.

The movie picked up steam over the weekend, adding 3 percent from Friday to Monday, said Fay, unusual for a horror flick and points to good word of mouth. The film generated surprisingly good reviews from critics, which helped sell the film to an over 25-year-old audience that doesn't generally go for creepy movies.

"The Three Stooges," an effort to bring the goofy comic trio to a new generation, pulled in $ 17.1 million for second place. The eye-poking act started as vaudeville comedy in 1930 and enjoyed its greatest popularity in through 1946, according to the online site Wikipedia.

In the current movie, this slapstick trio Larry, Curly and Moe stumble into a murder plot and star in a reality television show.

Fox spent about $ 35 million to produce the film and had projected opening weekend sales of around $ 10 million. Box office prognosticator had projected it would do $ 15 million.

"The Three Stooges" drew more than 52 percent of its audience from movie under the age of 25, said Chris Aronson, Fox's executive vice president for domestic distribution. That could point to a lengthy run in theaters, he said.

The comedy sequel "American Reunion" grossed $ 10.6 million, giving Comcast Universal Pictures a second film in the top ten. Its animated film "Dr. Deuss' The Loral," was tenth for the weekend with $ 3 million, adding to a total of $ 204 million so far this year.

"People said you could get more if we released them in the Summer, said Universal president of distribution Nikki Rocco. "but look at the summer lineup."

The summer will be filled with blockbusters in waiting, including sequels to "Men in Black" and "Spider-Man," and another installment of the Batman "Dark Knight" series.

The other new nationwide release, sci-fi thriller "Lockout," landed in tenth place with nearly $ 6.3 million at domestic theaters. The film tells the story of a man who tries to rescue the president's daughter from an outer space prison. The movie played in about 2,300 U.S. and Canadian theaters, compared with more than 3,900 for "Hunger Games."

Also this weekend, big-budget action movie "Battleship" opened in 26 overseas markets starting Wednesday. The film pulled in $ 58 million in offshore markets, according to distributor Universal Pictures.

News Corp's 20th Century Fox studio distributed "Three Stooges." "American Reunion" and "Battleship" were released by Comcast Corp's Universal Pictures. Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc, distributed "Titanic 3D" in domestic theaters.

Open Road Films, a joint venture between theater owners Regal Entertainment Group and AMC Entertainment Inc, distributed "Lockout." The movie was produced by independent studio Film District.

TOWIE's Gemma Collins is unimpressed when boyfriend Charlie recreates Titanic sketch scene

By Emily Sheridan

|

After dating for several weeks, Gemma Collins has been dying to get naked for new boyfriend Charlie King.

And in the first episode of the new series of The Only Way Is Essex, she finally removed her clothes... albeit in a very different way to she expected.

Inviting the bubbly blonde over to his Essex home for a romantic night in, Charlie explained he was a huge fan of the 1997 film Titanic.

Well this isn't exactly my idea of romance: Gemma Collins poses for boyfriend Charlie King as they recreate the Titanic sketch scene in The Only Way Is Essex

Fantasy come true: Charlie King admitted he was waiting for the right person to come along to draw

He admitted he had dreamed of recreating the famous scene when Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) draws Rose DuWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) when he's naked.

Ahead of her sitting, Charlie explained: 'The surprise is I want you to get naked for me.

'It's the 100 year anniversary of Titanic and I love the film. I always want to recreate that scene in the film where Jack sketches Rose.

Oh dear: Gemma doesn't know where to look when she sees Charlie's 'masterpiece'

A shocked Gemma replied: 'What the f**k are you talking about? That is sick. The weirdest thing I've ever heard in my life.'

Then he asked again: 'I've got my sketchbook and my pencil is sharpened. Shall I go and get my stuff?'

Still incredulous as his proposition, Gemma said: 'No Charlie, p**s off.'

At first visibly horrified, Gemma initially refused, until she was eventually persuaded to pose naked - with just a pink sheet to protect her modesty.

As she lay down on a chaise lounge, she complained: 'I feel like a pig in blankets - those things you eat on Christmas Day.'

Taking the whole thing very seriously, Charlie repeatedly asked Gemma to stop talking and stay still.

But it soon became clear, Charlie didn't share the artistic talents of Titanic's Jack.

He gushed: 'You're my piece of art. I'll never forget this moment.'

Gemma then managed to lower the tone as she asked: 'Are you gonna take it to bed and doosh one out over it?

'I'm bored to s**t, I've got a numb bum. Do my tits look sexy?'

But when she finally saw Charlie's finished piece of work, she wasn't impressed.

She said 'I think from that picture you're insinuating that I need a boob job...

Eventually Gemma heard what she wanted to hear after Charlie asked her to stay the night.

Earlier in the episode, Gemma told her mother Joan she was worried because they hadn't slept together yet.

She moaned: 'He hasn't insinuated anything... The passion is lacking. I don't wanna live like a fricking nun.'

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inducts 2012 Class

Watch Video

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame welcomed some new members Saturday night.
But some of the members of the bands being inducted didn’t make it to the festivities.

The most notable — or at least the most fussed about — absence?
Guns N’ Roses frontman and co-founder Axl Rose.
Earlier in the week, he wrote a letter to the Hall of Fame — via Facebook — to respectfully decline the invitation … and refuse induction.

Mentions of Axl’s name drew boos at the awards ceremony.
But — perhaps a bigger problem — how would the band perform without its lead singer?
Billboard reports.

“The GNR alumni [performed] a three-song set fronted by Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge, who also sings for Slash's band … ‘Sweet Child O' Mine’ and ‘Paradise City’ had the Town Hall crowd on its feet and pumping its collective fists.”

A writer for the Detroit Free Press says some others missed the show, too.

“Many of the 6,000 fans and rock VIPs who packed Public Hall had hoped [for] a rare re-grouping of the Rod Stewart-led Faces. But Stewart, who missed his 1994 induction as a solo artist due to an earthquake in Los Angeles, canceled this appearance due to illness (as did Beastie Boy Adam "MCA'' Yauch.)”

Red Hot Chili Peppers lead singer Anthony Kiedis expressed gratitude for his band’s recognition.
But he told The Cleveland Plain Dealer it’s no swan song.

“We’re very excited about playing music right now, just like we were in 1983 — so it’s a strange moment to stop and reflect … (FLASH) we’re going somewhere. How can we stop and take an award when we’re just halfway there.”

Meanwhile, a writer for The New York Times focused on how an event held in the Midwest still had such a coastal feel, saying …

“ … much of the show’s music was rooted squarely in the country’s entertainment capitals of New York and Los Angeles. Guns N’ Roses and the Red Hot Chili Peppers represented two branches of California rock in the 1980s, metal and punk. And the Beastie Boys and the mercurial songwriter Laura Nyro, if they have anything in common, were celebrated as but two slices of New York’s huge, multifaceted musical culture.”

Entertainment Weekly reports the 27th annual ceremony will air May 5 on HBO.

BGT basketball act Face Team already seen on Red Or Black

The hit show was blasted as it emerged that basketball act Face Team, who wowed judge Simon Cowell on Saturday, had already featured on another of his shows.

Simon appeared not to recognise the professional Hungarian stunt squad despite them also appearing last September on gameshow Red Or Black, which he produces.

BGT hosts Ant and Dec — who also front Red Or Black and appeared beside Face Team in a stunt for the show — seemed similarly unfamiliar with them.

Face Team, who mix basketball with acrobatics, were one of the standout performances on Saturday's BGT, with Cowell at one point staring in amazement and mouthing, "Wow!"

He gave them the thumbs up and told the delighted lads they had "four big fat yesses", sending them through into the next round of the competition.

Yet on Red Or Black the squad had competed to find out who could do the longest slam-dunk from a trampoline.

They got clocked on BGT by Jak Ball because he had also been a contestant on Red Or Black. Jak said: "They were pretty good at it. You don't really see anything else like it, so that's how I recognised them straight away."

The Southampton University student said it wasn't fair that they should be allowed to compete for the BGT crown at the expense of other acts who have not been involved in one of Cowell's shows before.

Controversy ... Simon Cowell

Controversy ... Simon Cowell

He said: "My girlfriend thought it was pretty odd to have Hungarians on the show but when I told her where I'd seen them she flipped her lid.

"I'm pretty angry too — I don't think it's right that they've already been on a Simon Cowell show before.

"It would be all right if Simon had come out and said he'd seen them, but he didn't.

"I feel cheated and I feel very bad for the contestants who did not get through because Face Team did."

Last night, a BGT insider defended the show, saying Cowell had been away when Face Team's part on Red Or Black was filmed.

The source said: "Face Team did appear on Red Or Black but they were a very small part of the show. Simon was in the US at the time and was in no way involved in them being on the show. Face Team were booked by ITV Studios, not Simon's company Syco.

"There's nothing to stop an act that appeared on Red Or Black performing on BGT.

"Simon didn't say anything like 'I have never seen this' like the other judges and in fact said they had to improve."

Red Or Black was a controversial show where contestants chose between seemingly random outcomes in the hope of being the last one standing and scooping the £1million prize.

Its first millionaire winner — brickie Nathan Hageman — had served half of a five-year jail sentence for brutally assaulting a woman.

'I immediately disliked him': Tulisa's father speaks out about the man alleged to have sold a sex tape featuring his daughter

By Daily Mail Reporter

|

Tulisa Contostavlos has already issued a video response to a sex tape featuring herself that was recently leaked to the press.

And now her father, Plato, has spoken about the damage the footage has done to his family, saying his daughter couldn't even speak about it.

The 53-year-old also laid the blame squarely at one man, Tulisa's ex Justin Edwards - although he has denied involvement in the video becoming public.

Speaking out: Plato Contostavlos has spoken about his daughter's sex tape, which was made public a few weeks ago

He told the Sunday Mirror: 'What Justin did has really brought the family down and destroyed us in some ways. Tulisa is strong but it seriously dented her confidence.I tried to speak to her about it but she was so upset she couldn't talk. She was in bits. He has ripped her heart apart.'

Plato, who was a drummer in famous seventies group Mungo Jerry, also recalled how he disliked Justin (known as MC Ultra) from that very first time they met.

He said: 'I remember the first time I met Justin.I picked Tulisa up one night from Camden and he was there. They were arguing in the street. I immediately disliked him and every time I met him after that he seemed arrogant and had little respect for me. I think he was just trying to piggyback on the fame of N-Dubz.

'But in Tulisa's eyes he was the one for her. She wanted to marry him at the time. They had even talked about having kids. She never told me why they split up but whatever happened does not excuse showing an intimate tape to the world.'

Plato also spoke about his sadness at the break-up of his daughter and Fazer, AKA Richard Rawson.

And he revealed that Simon Cowell has been very supportive of Tulisa since the sex tape hit the internet a few weeks ago.

Earlier this month Tulisa's legal fight to ban the video by releasing a statement to the High Court to defend herself.

In the statement, which has been obtained by The Sun, the X Factor judge said: 'I believe I must have been intoxicated at the time the video footage was taken.

'Now that I can see the video, I can see it is me in it.

'I must have been very drunk to let my then boyfriend Justin Edwards, who I also know features in the video, take the footage.'

The 28-year-old has denied he leaked the footage saying it would have been 'ungentlemanly' and he had been 'brought up better than that'.

But Tulisa had made legal moves to extend an injunction banning the footage and is reportedly suing him for damages of up to £100,000.

The trial is set to begin this summer.
