One Direction's Zayn Malik and Harry Styles hit the Scary Canary bar in Sydney

So the punters on their year out got a surprise when One Direction's Harry Styles and Zayn Malik turned up at Sydney's Scary Canary Backpacker Bar.

After another busy day of promotions it was probably a relief for the lads to get away from their passionate fan base in Oz.

Some have taken their loyalty a bit too far and bombarded a young radio station receptionist with abuse after Zayn asked her out.

Two expectant fathers battle for last place on The Voice in Will.i.am's team... and it's the second's spine-tingling performance which leaves music mogul in tears

By Alanah Eriksen

|

Viewers will tonight see Will.i.am break down into tears on The Voice tonight as he picks the last contestant for his team.

The music mogul denies a handful of singers as he holds out for the right tenth person.

The end of the third show in the first UK series sees two expectant fathers battle it out for the last place.

Talented: Jaz Ellington will be seen wowing the judges tonight as he scores the final place on The Voice

A gigging muscian, Daniel Wilson, who is accompanied by his heavily-pregnant wife, just didn't have enough to make the 37-year-old - even though fellow judge Danny O'Donoghue was yelling at him to do so.

Then music teacher Jaz Ellington came on stage.

A few seconds into singing Ed Sheeran's The A Team, Will turns his chair around, much to the annoyance of the other judges - Danny, Jessie J and Tom Jone, who want to see the man behind the powerful voice.

Jaz received a standing ovation from the crowd and Danny, while his three-months pregnant wife is seeing crying backstage.

Will then makes a massive emotional speech, staring with: 'I'm goign to speak from the heart right now. A couple of singers ago, I got a little sad, because I wrote a song called Ordinary People, and it's a piece of my heart and I really wanted that girl to be on my team. So I was kind of like shooken up.

'And then a real incredible singer came out, two singers after her. I was hesitant to hit the button. I was like "No don't do it, something else is going to come that's really spectacular."  And here you come just singing like you just fell out of the sky and stuff.

He added: 'So as a listen to every single person on the planet. Follow your gut.

'Maybe you had a different person you wanted to be with, but you're stuck with me and you're in good hands. I'm going to let you do you. And when you need me, I'll be there with my weapons to shoot down anything that comes our way.'

Jessie then asks if he can sing something else - the first time a contestant has been asked to do so.

Will is hesitant at first, saying: 'He's on my team now and we don't want to give any strategies away to them... we've got to stay focused.'

But when Jaz says he wants to sing John Legend's Ordinary People, which Will wrote, he quickly changes his mind.

After the soulful rendition, Will is seen wiping his eyes, before hugging the budding star.

Jaz had earlier spoken about his unborn child.
'If I was to be successful in this competition, it would mean I could turn around and tell my son or my daughter "Guess what you can do it. Don't let nothing hold you back. Go for it.'

He also spoke about his inspiration.

'Gospel is definitely is a big influence as to whom I am today. It's always a great thing to sing about what you believe, that you sing from you heart. So you get to sing from your heart.'

Caine’s Arcade

caines arcade hollywoodgrind 1 Caines Arcade

A 9 year-old boy named Caine Monroy built an arcade out of cardboard boxes, and called it Caine's Arcade. He setup the arcade next to his Dad's Smart Parts Auto store located in East Los Angeles. Here's the story from Caine's website:

Caine Monroy is a 9-year old boy who spent his summer vacation building an elaborate DIY cardboard arcade in his dad's used auto parts store.

Caine dreamed of the day he would have lots of customers visit his arcade, and he spent months preparing everything, perfecting the game design, making displays for the prizes, designing elaborate security systems, and hand labeling paper-lunch-gift-bags. However, his dad's autoparts store (located in an industrial part of East LA) gets almost zero foot traffic, so Caine's chances of getting a customer were very small, and the few walk in customers that came through were always in too much of a hurry to get their auto part to play Caine's Arcade. But Caine never gave up.

One day, by chance, I walked into Smart Parts Auto looking for a used door handle for my '96 Corolla. What I found was an elaborate handmade cardboard arcade manned by a young boy who asked if I would like to play. I asked Caine how it worked and he told me that for $ 1 I could get two turns, or for $ 2 I could get a Fun Pass with 500 turns. I got the Fun Pass.

The man was so impressed with Caine's creative effort he arranged for a flash mob to visit the arcade to suprise Caine, and created a short movie to tell the story below. A web site was also setup for Caine where people can contribute to his Caines Arcade Scholarship Fund to help pay for his eduction. Although the goal was to raise $ 100,000, so fa $ 143,531 has already been raised.

This is an incredible story about a young man who puts smiles on people's faces just by being who he is.

They think it’s bawl over... it is now

The sobfest comes as the two rivals square up for the last time after BGT chief Simon Cowell waved the white flag and agreed to end the shows' overlap.

Tonight, The Voice packs an emotional punch as a pretty barmaid makes a big impression — revealing she nearly DIED from meningitis.

Jenny Jones, 25, had a promising career as a singer touring with stars including dance act Basshunter.

But three years ago she was struck down by the deadly brain bug. It left her hospitalised and close to death.

She tells her emotional story on tonight's show, saying: "My career was going really well and I had just toured with Basshunter when I fell really ill with meningitis and everything totally stopped. At the time I was devastated.

"I didn't think I'd be able to sing and perform again.

"I started getting better and feeling more positive and that I was lucky to pull through it. This is a second chance for me and has made me more positive and determined to follow my dreams." Meanwhile, BGT will air its own compelling story featuring dancer Paula Moulton.

She was left wheelchair-bound after contracting MRSA on a visit to hospital to treat pneumonia.

She and able-bodied partner Gary Lyness wow the panel with their flamboyant routine. Judge David Walliams tells the pair, known as Strictly Wheels: "That was amazing. You turned what might have been a negative into a positive."

The Voice also features Ruth Brown, who reveals she fulfilled her dad's dying wishes by trying out for the BBC talent show.

The 19-year-old wows the coaches with a blow-out rendition of When Love Takes Over, her powerful voice prompting judge Tom Jones to turn his chair.

She says on the show: "Singing has helped me through a lot of bad things.

"My dad died on December 20 and before he died he tried to help me with my singing career."

Last week The Voice BEAT BGT during the 20 minutes the shows overlapped.

Tonight the two shows go head-to-head for the last time, with BGT moving to a slot half an hour later than the previous shows from next week.

The Voice coaches will pick their final acts before moving on to the battle rounds next week when the 40 wannabes will be whittled down.

Jane Curtin looks at "Unforgettable" life and career

NEW YORK (Reuters) - To many, Jane Curtin is best known for her role as an original cast member of Saturday Night Live in the 1970s, creating a slew of iconic characters, including the mother of "The Coneheads," and the news anchor with a deadpan delivery on SNL's "Weekend Update."

During her post-SNL years, Curtin has remained a consistent presence on television, starring in a number of popular sitcoms, including "Kate & Allie" (1984-1989) and "3rd Rock From The Sun" (1996-2001).

She recently joined the cast of CBS's, "Unforgettable," in her first role as a regular on a dramatic series. The two-time Emmy Award-winner plays Medical Examiner, Dr. Joanne Webster, a brilliant forensic pathologist with a sardonic wit who teaches romantic poetry on the side.

The hour-long procedural crime drama, starring Poppy Montgomery and Dylan Walsh, follows a female detective with an uncanny detailed memory and airs Tuesday nights at 10 p.m.

Reuters spoke to Curtin about her new dramatic TV role, her career and her days on "Saturday Night Live."

Q: How did you prepare to play a forensic pathologist?

A: "I watched a lot of procedural dramas that had medical examiners so I know what they did. I also met with a former Medical Examiner, Shiya Ribowsky, who was just so interesting. He basically told me about the day-to-day existence of medical examiners, what their education is like, and how they generally relate to other people within the department. It was an interesting, fun conversation. We had a great time."

Q: Don't you ever get squeamish while dealing with the sometimes graphic subject matter in "Unforgettable?"

A: "You reach a certain age, and I come from a culture of open caskets so you sort of get over that squeamishness. You also know you're working on something that's not real. I had to take a beef heart out of a dummy cadaver in one scene, and I thought 'I could just sort of juggle these, I suppose.'"

Q: How does it feel to be back filming in The Big Apple?

A: "New York is a wonderful place to shoot. The bystanders are great. They are enthusiastic. They respect the process, and you get the energy of the city. Even when you're in the studio, you still have that New York aura, as you're dealing with New York teamsters and New York actors. The city keeps feeding you this delicious energy."

Q: Poppy Montgomery plays a cop with "Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory," an extremely rare condition that results in the ability to remember everything. Do you think it would be a curse or a blessing to remember everything in detail?

A: "I don't know if I would want to be haunted with memories all the time. I think that it would be very cluttered. I actually think it would be really annoying."

Q: Was SNL really as much fun as it appeared to be?

A: "The 90 minutes was. The actual show was exhilarating. It was such an adrenal rush. You were shot out of a cannon and you landed 90 minutes later, and you were just so glad that nobody died and that nobody made a complete fool out of themselves. It was stunning how exciting it was to do that 90 minute show."

Q: Lately, we're seeing other SNL original cast members on TV: Chevy Chase, starring in "Community," Garrett Morris in his role on "Two Broke Girls." Do you think this a trend?

A: "We've all just reached the age where they need codgers. If you stay in the game long enough, they'll call your name.

Q: What's the secret to your long success?

A: "I never really marketed myself, so each job I was given was a new marketing tool, and that would be the way I marketed myself. I think if you go from show to show without doing that big PR blitz it's helpful because people can get pretty sick of your face if you're just out there all the time. And keep a low profile, hold in your stomach and be a good sport."

Q: Do you keep in touch with SNL cast members?

A: "Bill Murray had a wonderful party about two months ago, and Laraine (Newman) came from Los Angeles, and Paul Shaffer and Tom Davis were there, and Dan (Aykroyd) was on the phone. And there were other people there that were not SNL people, but it just had a feeling of a bunch of friends getting together who hadn't seen each other in a while. And it was wonderful. Just wonderful. We all had a great time. It's nice to reconnect with them. We've all been through a lot. We've all had interesting lives and there's still that connection that we have. I liken it to a sibling relationship. You just can't get beyond the fact that you are tied together."

First picture of Robert Pattinson in new flick Cosmopolis

The first official snap from the film gives R-Patz fans a glimpse of the 25-year-old in his role as money man Eric Packer — a billionaire asset manager whose life is thrown into chaos when he loses massive amounts of his clients' dosh.

Riding in the back of a plush limo in New York, the Twilight star swaps his shabby slacks for a strapping suit and combs his usually shaggy mop of hair into a short, smart crop.

Robert Pattinson as Edward in Twilight

Vampire ... Robert as Edward in Twilight

Flashing a bling watch, the Brit looks in healthier spirits than his pale vampire counterpart Edward — although he maintains his usual gloomy countenance.

Robert — who recently partied at a German fetish club with his dad — stepped in to replace Colin Farrell after the Irish star backed out of the flick with no explanation earlier this year.

The heart-throb — who is currently dating Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart — has most recently been sending cinemagoers' pulses racing with his role as a 19th century lothario in Bel Ami.

And his performance as a tall, dark, handsome and filthy rich man is likely to do the same...

Beyoncé leaves baby Blue Ivy at home as she slips out for a quick date night with Jay-Z

By J J Anisiobi

Since becoming a mother recently, Beyonce has taken a step back from the New York social scene.

But after spending the day with her baby Blue, the singer couldn't resist sneaking off for a few hours with her husband Jay-Z.

With her three-month-old daughter presumably tucked up in bed under the watchful eye of a nanny, the 30-year-old snuck into the Cartier Juste un Clou after-party.

The singer and rapper husband Jay-Z were there to support his newest protogee Rita Ora, who was performing at the event at the Skylight studios.

Earlier on Thursday, Beyonce was seen bringing her daughter to her office.

The Love on Top singer stayed hidden behind a pair of 1960s style sunglasses and was heavily guarded by her security team.

The mother-of-one wore a baggy pale cream coloured jumper with green stilettos and pale trousers.

Three-month-old Blue was completely wrapped up in a big tribal pattern wool blanket and Beyoncé held her delicately and closely to her chest.

The trip to her mother's work place would have been very insightful for the baby, if she had known exactly what was going on and where she was.

As well as drawing inspiration from her own mother, Blue Ivy will be able to look up to Michelle Obama, who Beyoncé lauded praise on earlier today.

In an open letter that she posted on her website she described the First Lady as 'the ultimate example of a truly strong African-American woman.'

She wrote that she was 'proud to have my daughter grow up in a world where she has people like you to look up to.'

Beyoncé particulary likes the fact that she is 'humble, loving and sincere' despite 'the pressure, and the stress of being under the microscope'.

She also praised Mrs Obama for being a caring mother, and a loving wife.

'She builds and nurtures her family, while also looking out for so many millions in so many ways,' the letter read.
