Westlife Shane’s £4m debt

A property company set up by the Irish boyband singer, 32, ran into trouble owing £4million.

He applied for a legal agreement in London this week to pay back creditors over a period of time.

A source said last night: "Shane was desperate to launch himself as a property tycoon when Westlife started to wind down.

"But it has backfired massively. The property company is saddled with millions of debt.

"It's been disastrous timing for him to invest in property amid a global economic crisis.

"He's in dire straits."

The Flying Without Wings star was once said to be worth £25million.

He moved from Sligo, Ireland, to Cobham in Surrey at Christmas with his wife Gillian, 32, and their three children.

Shane and two family members are now being pursued by the Bank of Ireland in the Irish High Court over unpaid debts.

The bank was one of several that helped fund Shafin building projects.

One development, a community centre, office units, private clinic, gym, creche and 68 homes in Sligo, Ireland, was due to begin last summer but no work has taken place.

The firm lost £2.2million in 2009 and £2.4million in 2010. It also has £4.1million debts.

Westlife — once managed by X Factor judge Louis Walsh — have a final world tour lined up this year and will then split up.

Shane declined to comment last night.

Danielle Hope was thrown in the deep end of fame when she won that Over The Rainbow TV show and found herself, at 18 and with zero professional experience, playing Dorothy in Andrew Lloyd Webber's production of The Wizard Of Oz opposite Michael Crawford at the London Palladium.

Often, when an unknown is hurled into the spotlight, they underwhelm. They lose their voice, and play the provinces. Sometimes for ever.

Not Danielle. Her voice can do anything she wants it to, which is why another impresario now has her under contract.

Cameron Mackintosh has picked her to play Eponine in Les Miserables at the Queen's Theatre from June 18.

Danielle did four auditions. 'It was nice to do a real audition and earn the part. Eponine is in love with Marius, but she's helping him to be with Cossette. Unrequited love is the most painful thing — and the most interesting — to play,' she tells me as we drink tea at the Union club in Soho.

She's eager to get back to work and feels uncomfortable when she's not labouring away. While still at school she took a part-time waitressing job.

'My mum's a waitress; my dad's always had building contracts. I don't come from a particularly special background, but I've got a lovely family.

They work hard, I work hard. I didn't have things done for me at home. I knew how to put on washing, make my bed and get something to eat.'

It put her in good stead for when she moved to London. She lived alone until this week, but is now sharing a flat in Chelsea.

Danielle says she's pleased to be getting the experience of working in another West End show.

The Wizard Of Oz was her first professional acting job and she was lucky that Lloyd Webber showed her the ropes and Michael Crawford — and Hannah Waddingham, who played the Wicked Witch — took her under their wing, and gave her a nightly master class in stagecraft.

If you want to understand a sense of the enormity of what she went through, then check out the hit U.S. backstage TV drama Smash that starts on Sky Atlantic on April 21.

It shows how an actress with no experience of big time theatre goes up for the title role in a musical about Marilyn Monroe.

Danielle said she learned a lot about comic timing from Crawford, and how to establish a relationship with an audience.

Their friendship has continued after their Wizard contracts ended. Crawford has returned to his home in New Zealand, but they still email and have hopes of meeting up in California when Crawford and his partner go there later this month.

A musical based on the real-life story that inspired J.M. Barrie to write Peter Pan will open in Leicester in the autumn, followed, it is hoped, by a West End run some time next year.

The show, Finding Neverland, is based on a movie of the same name that starred Johnny Depp as Barrie and Kate Winslet as Sylvia Llewelyn Davies, whose four sons befriended the author.

Julian Ovenden, the award-winning singer and actor, will portray Barrie — a part he played in two back-to-back workshops performed in London last December.

Finding Neverland will go into rehearsals on July 30 with performances starting at the Curve Theatre in Leicester in mid-September, where it will have a four to five-week run.

Harvey Weinstein, the Oscar-winning film studio boss, was behind the 2004 movie and always felt it should be adapted for the theatre.

Weinstein and Victoria Parker, one of his key executives, are the driving forces behind the production, along with director and choreographer Rob Ashford.

Ashford, when he hasn't been busy choreographing Michael Grandage's Broadway production of Rice-Lloyd Webber's Evita, has been extensively re-working Finding Neverland's book (which was rather slow) with writer Allan Knee, who penned the movie, aided by Scott Frankel and Michael Korie, creators of the show's score and lyrics.

Finding Neverland has some enchanting songs, but all involved know there's a lot of work to be done. Once it's on stage there will certainly be flying boys and even an airborne dog.

Auditions for all roles are taking place on April 16. Ovenden's new album If You Stay will be released on April 23.

Ronan Keating, who will make his debut at the Royal Opera House when he appears as a special guest star at the Olivier Awards next Sunday, April 15.

It's the first time the theatrical gongs have been handed out at the ROH in Covent Garden, although the BAFTA show has been held there for several years.

Keating (pictured) will sing a number from his album When Ronan Met Burt, which features songs by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. I gather Keating's looking to sing something from Promises, Promises. I suspect it'll be I'll Never Fall In Love Again, but it hasn't been settled yet.

Best actress nominees include Celia Imrie, Kristin Scott Thomas, Lesley Manville, Marcia Warren and Ruth Wilson.

Summer Strallen and Tom Chambers, who are in Top Hat, which starts previewing at the Aldwych Theatre from April 19. They star in the roles Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire played in the 1935 RKO movie of the same name.

I caught the show on its pre-London stop in Woking (where tickets were a steep £58 after the booking fee!) and it was 100 times better than when I saw it last year in Milton Keynes.

Summer has more to do and she's sultry and funny and boy, can she dance. Tom moves more effortlessly than he did in MK, too. The show has some great numbers, and Woking had a ball, so I hope it takes off at the Aldwych.

I should mention that Astaire's daughter Ava will take part in a discussion about Fred and his early dancing partner: his sister, called Adele.  Also taking part in the discussion will be celebrated choreographer Matthew Bourne and writer Kathleen Riley. They will discuss Ms Riley's biography of The Astaires — Fred And Adele, at the National's Lyttelton Theatre at 6pm on May 14.

Harry Hadden-Paton, who leads the ensemble of Jamie Lloyd's splendid production of She Stoops To Conquer, which is on at the Olivier Theatre till April 21. Do catch Hadden-Paton and his fellow cast members, who include John Heffernan, Sophie Thompson, Katherine Kelly, Steve Pemberton, Cush Gumbo, David Flynn and others.

I just caught up with it this week and it boosted my spirits immensely.

Creator of Porsche 911 sports car dies aged 76

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the creator of Porsche's 911 sports car, has died at age 76, Porsche said on Thursday.

A grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, who founded the Stuttgart-based sports car maker and developed the Volkswagen Beetle under a contract with the Nazis in the 1930s, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche invented the 911 model in 1963.

Originally labeled as 901, Porsche's two-seater classic model has since been upgraded over seven generations of the car with the latest version unveiled at last September's Frankfurt Auto Show.

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche quit the company's operational business in 1972, though stayed on as member of Porsche's supervisory board. He was chairman between 1990 and 1993 when Porsche was still saddled with losses stemming from declining vehicle sales and towering development costs.

The company gave no cause for Porsche's death. A cousin of Ferdinand Piech, the chairman of VW, Porsche was a member of the Porsche and Piech families who together control about 90 percent of common shares of Porsche SE, the holding company which holds about 51 percent of VW stock.

VW and Porsche agreed to combine in 2009 after Porsche racked up more than 10 billion euros ($ 13.06 billion) of debt in a botched attempt to take over VW.

Europe's biggest carmaker is in the process of buying the remaining 50.1 percent stake in Porsche's automotive business it does not own after the two companies dropped plans for a merger last September because of pending lawsuits in the United States. ($ 1 = 0.7655 euros)

Is 'Titanic 3D' Just a Money Grab?

James Cameron’s blockbuster film Titanic was released for a second time Wednesday- this time, in 3D. The 18 million dollar conversion took even more time than it did to originally film the movie. CBS News spoke to Cameron leading up to the re-release.

“It took 300 artists working at workstations for over a year, about 60 weeks, to literally outline every object every character every feature on every face and do it for every frame.”

The original release in 1997 attracted movie-goers to the cinemas-- sometimes multiple occasions-- to watch gripping romance unfold . But will the same audiences now a decade older choose to see it again as it returns to the big screen? A writer for Capital New York thinks there’s reason to...

“Titanic 3-D’s audiences won't be there because they want to see the film again. They’ll be there because they want to experience something from the past, to recapture or revise the original experience of watching the film.”

But some film critics and blogs are suggesting the 3D release may just be a ploy to make more money from the already second-highest grossing film of all time. A contributor for The Green Bay Press Gazette says...

“The fact that it’s being reissued to coincide with the 100th anniversary, it seems more like commercialization of a tragic event and playing the 3-D card in order to make extra income. That may make it a nonevent, and maybe it’ll just do the same numbers as ’Star Wars.’”

Regardless, the question is- what does 3D bring to the table for audiences? A writer for Philly.com argues only certain films are suitable for 3D.

“The hues of "Titanic," by comparison, do not lend themselves to 3-D. I spent an hour flipping the glasses up and down, comparing the images, and with the glasses on, what you see on screen is murkier. Everything loses a little definition, a little life.”

Cameron broke box office records in 2009 with his sci-fi action 3D extravaganza, Avatar. So- a writer for New York Daily News says adding another dimension to the already momentous Titanic is doing exactly what Cameron is best at.

“Cameron is in his element steering us through the eye-popping, pulse-pounding final hour. He never loses his way amidst the now even more spectacular spectacle.”

You can catch Titanic 3-D in cinemas as of April 4th.

As the ratings battle between the BBC's The Voice and ITV1's Britain's Got Talent becomes increasingly bitter, the Beeb's new presenting duo has been largely overlooked.

But the selection of Reggie Yates as co-host, alongside the ever-popular Holly Willoughby, has fulfilled a long-held desire to discover a high-profile black prime-time presenter.

A lack of racial diversity among its top hosts has long provided a headache for BBC management, which, for many years, has been criticised for having too many white faces fronting major shows.

Speaking for the first time about the sensitive issue, Reggie, 28, tells me he has been aware of the lack of role models for black youth on the screen.

'Growing up, there was no one for me to look at,' he admits. 'Even now there's only Lenny Henry, Trevor McDonald, Trevor Nelson and me. There are not many black people in the media, that's just a fact.'

But Reggie insists race did not play a part in his appointment. 'I've done over 3,000 hours of live TV. I've presented Top Of The Pops for ten years. The fact that someone my age is doing The Voice is a more significant thing than someone of my colour.

'For me, the bottom line is: "Are you good enough?" I find it really frustrating when people trade on their race or believe they can't achieve because of their race.

'When I turn on my TV, if the person fronting the show is good enough, I don't question their ethnic background.' 

Reggie is viewed as a major face of the future at the BBC, but he's determined to continue making documentaries about social issues for youth channel BBC3.

The former child actor, who was raised on a tough North London council estate, says: 'I understand why young people get frustrated when they see some middle-aged Newsnight guy talking about something he has no experience of.' 

Reggie also defended the £22 million price tag of The Voice. 'At the end of the series, I don't think anyone will question how much was spent to make it a reality,' he argues.

Now, I'm not so sure about that.

But I'm told Kara Tointon's relationship with her professional dance partner from the show will almost certainly rule her out of the coveted job.

The ex-EastEnders actress began dating Artem Chigvintsev while competing on the 2010 series and they've been together since.

However, BBC bosses want to re-sign Artem for the milestone tenth series of the show later this year. They believe it would be impossible for Kara to fairly score her partner and the celebrity with whom he is paired.

A Strictly source tells me: 'There's no way Kara can do it. She is very serious with Artem and it will prove too much of a conflict of interest.'

No final decisions will be made until the appointment of a new executive producer for the popular Saturday night series is announced.

But BBC bosses are already weighing up the potential fallout if they decide not to return the ever-popular Arlene Phillips to the judging panel.

A strategy outlining how they will justify not re-hiring the 68-year-old is secretly being discussed. Bosses are desperate to avoid a repeat of the ageism debate that surrounded their decision to axe the veteran choreographer in 2009.
